Phase 1-3 Automotive Artisan Development Programme

Programme Overview

Phase 1-3 Automotive Artisan Development Programme

The Phase 1-3 Training programme is a structured, multi-level apprenticeship pathway designed to transform learners into highly skilled automotive artisans. This comprehensive curriculum moves from the foundational "Phase 1" engineering basics through complex engine overhauls in "Phase 2," and finally to specialized power-train and fluid systems in "Phase 3".

This programme is a modular apprenticeship designed to meet the rigorous standards of the South African automotive trade. It provides a logical progression from workshop fundamentals (Fasteners, Handtools, and Measuring Equipment) to advanced vehicle systems, including Common Rail fuel systems, Turbochargers, and complex Braking Systems.

The Three-Phase Learning Path
Phase 1: Engineering Foundations

Focus: Mastering the tools and physics of the trade.

  • Workshop Basics: Mastery of hand tools, fasteners, and precision measuring equipment.
  • Technical Literacy: Engineering materials, basic engineering drawings, and the fundamentals of modern trades.
  • Initial Service Skills: Learning to perform professional Lube Services on Light (LDV) and Heavy (HDV) vehicles.
  • Rigging & Welding: Sling loading/lifting equipment and the "Fuse and Cut Metals" (Basic Welding) module.
Phase 2: Engine & Auxiliary Systems

Focus: Dismantling, diagnosing, and repairing the core vehicle engine.

  • Engine Overhaul: Specialized training on Cylinder Heads and Engine Blocks.
  • System Maintenance: In-depth repair of Cooling, Lubrication, and Fuel systems.
  • Dynamics: Mastering Steering, Suspension, and the principles of Wheel Alignment.
  • Tune-Up: Practical engine tuning and electrical servicing.
Phase 3: Drivetrain & Specialized Technologies

Focus: Advanced power transfer and high-tech vehicle subsystems.

  • Drivetrain Mastery: Diagnostics and repair of Clutches, Transmissions, Prop-shafts, Differentials, and Axles.
  • Advanced Fuel & Induction: Specialized modules on Common Rail diesel systems and Turbocharger maintenance.
  • Fluid Power & Control: Hydraulics basics and advanced Pneumatic systems.
  • Safety Systems: Comprehensive training on modern Braking Systems and Exhaust systems.
Artisan Development Path (NQF Level 2 - 4).

Completion of all phases and the required workplace hours allows the learner to qualify for the National Red Seal Trade Test for Motor or Diesel Mechanics.
